What is the Upright Talented?
The 'Upright Talented' is the talented image being wanted by this times.
Thanks to the hottest education fever, the competition-based education orienting for top universities and top jobs, Korean GDP has exceeded over $20,000,and Korea has grown up into a member of world top 10 economic-rich nations. Though the food matter is relatively solved, but the gulf between rich and poor is being increased. Furthermore, of the all OECD members, Korean happiness index is ranked in the lowest position. Due to the entrance examination hell, the school peer's violence, and the bullying, Korean teenager occupies the highest share in students drinking alcohols and smoking in the world, and it is not easy for such teenagers to enjoy happy lives while they will get older into young men, employees, or housewives and then seniors.
Besides, the number of violent crimes like sexual assault, violence and murder is increased. Such phenomenon is considered as a side effect generated by the education system concentrating on the success and economic profit with ignoring the humanism.
Korean government seeks for a solution to deal with such educational, social problems from the upright personality. Then it reinforces the upright personality education as an alternative to solve the problems of school peer's violence and bullying, and compulsorily forces to give the upright personality education in schools. What the Korean parents have wished the most to government is appeared as the reinforcement of upright personality education.
The purpose of education is to achieve self-fulfillment. The purpose of education stated in Korean Education Act is to raise good persons widely benefiting the world. From old times, Korea has importantly considered the values of upright personality like one's characteristics, the personality, the manners, the morals, the conscience, the consideration and the respect, but in present time, the values are under taboos.
Now Korean education should be changed from the solution for food, housing and clothing matter into the life pursing the value of happiness, the self-fulfillment, and the personality achievement. In order to lead such a society, we need the 'upright talented' achieving the values on the basis of upright personality.
Education is a 100-year plan. When the education is changed, our life is changed and then our society is changed.
Upright personality education is not limited into an alternative for teenager-related educational problems simply like school peer's violence and the bullying, but needs to be applied into the cultural, social education systems importantly considering the value of upright personality in the whole society.
While the world is changed, but the values of education are not changed. Korean has the spirit of public benefit, Korean traditional educational philosophy which the mankind can emphasize, and the spirit is the last solution to survive Korean educational field where competitions are rampant.
When the education is changed, the individual's life is changed, and his/her society is changed.
Raising the upright talented is the education raising the people of 'public benefit' being stated in Korean Education Act, and the education raising the talented encompassing the 'human being' and the 'Earth' on the basis of the spirit of 'public benefit'.
